MPs’ pay 2024-25
Today, IPSA has announced the Board’s decision to increase MPs’ pay for the financial year 2024/25 by 5.5%. This is line with the award recently agreed for the senior civil service and takes MPs’ salary from £86,584 to £91,346 from 1 April 2024.
As the regulatory body, we know it’s important we better explain and contextualise the funds we provide, and we know there is a lack of understanding about how our decision is taken.
For the first time, we have produced a report to explain how the decision on MPs’ pay has been made this year and the principles we use to make that decision. The report also tackles some common myths and misunderstandings about MPs’ pay.
You can read the MPs’ Pay report on our website. We have also issued a press release, which you can read on our website.
Our Chair, Richard Lloyd, said: “IPSA has been responsible for deciding MPs’ pay since 2011. Since then, our aim has been to make fair decisions on pay, both for MPs and the public.
“Serving as an MP should not be reserved to those wealthy enough to fund it themselves. We believe our decision recognises the vital role MPs play in our democracy and considers the continued economic challenges facing the country. We are committed to supporting a Parliament that reflects our society, where people from all walks of life can decide to become MPs.”
MPs’ business costs publication
We have published details of all claims processed in the period from 1 October to 30 November 2023.
We routinely publish these details so members of the public can have transparency over MPs’ business costs.
The next publication is due on Thursday 16 May 2024.

Scheme of MPs’ Staffing and Business Costs 2024-25
We have published the Scheme of MPs’ Staffing and Business Costs for 2024-25, which will come into effect from 1 April 2024.
The new Scheme shows the changes to budget amounts and staff salary ranges for the new financial year, which were announced recently.

Notice periods
A recent change to IPSA Online now allows MPs' staff to view their contractual notice periods.
This change has been implemented ahead of the next general election where we anticipate a significant number of MPs' staff will want to know their notice period.

MP staff pay and budgets
In last week's Bulletin, we wrote to you about our Board's decision of a 6.2% increase to staffing budgets.
You can find more information on the automatic annual salary increase for staff on our website.
